Since 2023, the NGO PADEM has been implementing a project in Luxembourg aimed at reducing discrimination and promoting social cohesion. On this page, you will find all the information, advice and resources that have been compiled and produced over the last few years. The entire team is at your disposal for any questions, requests for information or the organisation of workshops (integration@padem.org).

Act

Collection of activities for addressing discrimination and racism with children

As part of the ‘Osez-Agir’ project, supported by the Ministry of Family, Solidarity, Living Together and Welcoming, PADEM is committed to promoting awareness of discrimination and racism from an early age. This project was designed in close collaboration with informal education stakeholders during several workshops for reflection and experience sharing.

This collection of activities is the result of this collective effort. It brings together the educational resources used by the PADEM team as well as those shared by workshop participants. Its aim is to provide tools for adults – facilitators, educators, parents or volunteers – who wish to address the issues of discrimination, racism and living together with children and young people aged 3 to 18.

This collection is designed as an evolving tool, intended to be enriched over the years with feedback from the field and everyone’s experiences. It is part of a participatory dynamic: we encourage you to make it your own, adapt it to your audience, and share your suggestions with us.

All the resources mentioned in this document are available at PADEM’s premises.

Understand

Some important definitions

Racism: An attitude of hostility, ranging from contempt to hatred, towards a group of people based on their ‘racial’ or ethnic identity. It manifests itself in behaviours and speech based on stereotypes or prejudices. This can lead to social practices ranging from avoidance to persecution.

Invisible/latent racism: A form of implicit and insidious racism (racial microaggression, anonymous accounts on social media).

Unconscious racism: A form of racism that is uncontrolled within us; even a fundamentally non-racist person will have racist attitudes or ways of reacting without being aware of it.

In Luxembourg, immigration is not a recent phenomenon; this territory has often been a landing place for various communities seeking prosperity.

Stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination

Stereotypes arise mainly from our brain’s ability to simplify the amount of information by categorising the world around us.

When we associate a characteristic with an entire group of individuals, we are categorising and simplifying. This is known as cognitive bias. This pattern can lead to discriminatory behaviour, even if it is unconscious!
