Sumaj Punchay created in 2001 is a non-profit NGO. She has more than 10 years of experience in implementing climate change adaptation projects through water resources management, family farming, and capacity building of men and women of indigenous populations living in rural areas.

Context

Climate change and its effects on productive activities are alarming, it is the climatic factors such as delayed rains, frost, drought, hail and temperature changes that affect agricultural production, causing losses in areas rural areas and affecting the food supply. According to the Ministry of Rural and Land Development, during the first half of 2023, droughts and frost affected more than 486,000 families in 2,800 communities, including communities in the municipality of Tarabuco. The diagnosis of vulnerability to climate change developed during the 1st phase of the project lists the communities which present a high level of risk in the face of climatic factors. Finally, the lack of water affects children who are more exposed to malnutrition due to the lack of quality and quantity of food and the consumption of contaminated water.

The mission

The climate objective is the main objective of the project. This seeks to contribute to reducing the vulnerability induced by climate change in the municipality of Tarabuco, and to strengthen on the one hand, the resilience and adaptability of families in the face of the effects of climate change and on the other hand, the Municipal Risk Management Unit as measures to contribute to adaptation to the effects of climate change.

Activities

-Improvement of families’ resilience capacities through adaptation actions (construction of water storage/distribution systems, implementation of water “sowing/harvesting” techniques increasing the flow rate of sources and greenhouse cultivation ) and mitigation (organic cultivation of vegetables and products with low water consumption) with regard to the management of water, soil and crops.

-Improvement of food security and family income with productive diversification through agroecology and techniques adapted to the effects of climate change. Actions will be carried out to forestate/reforestate 60 hectares and train staff to take care of it.

-Raising awareness among children/adolescents of mitigation techniques for the effects of climate change so that they influence their communities/municipalities through actions to combat climate change.

-Strengthening local government (Risk Management Unit), in order to implement actions responding to the effects of climate change.

Beneficiaries

The beneficiaries (1700 people) are 340 indigenous Yampara families from rural communities in Tarabuco. These are 240 new families (5 communities) and 100 families from the 1st phase of the project (10 communities) with whom additional actions for adaptation to climate change, monitoring and technical assistance will be carried out. The selection criteria are: having children, having access to a water source and being the owner of the area to be reforested (new families), committing to participate.
