Sustainable waste management and resilience to climate change in rural Mongolia
État : In progress | Nombre de bénéficiaires : 36,000 people
Durée du projet : February 2024 – January 2029 / 5 years
Lieu : Mongolia: Bulgan Province + 2 other provinces (one in the West and one in the East)
Local partner
The Ecosoum association was created in 2018 and immediately launched its first project, dedicated to improving household waste management.
Since then, Ecosoum is also in the process of developing:
- an agricultural project aimed at supporting and developing local organic farming,
- another project aimed at strengthening the capacity for artisanal production of local goods and services useful to the soum population.
These projects are all carried out with a view to increased local resilience, particularly in the face of climate change.
The Ecosoum association is particularly legitimate in the implementation of its projects because it is made up exclusively of residents of the villages where the projects take place and it benefits from the formal recognition of local authorities in the implementation of such projects. Ecosoum also counts among its associative members based in Ulaanbaatar many volunteers with expertise in areas linked to climate change issues (architect specializing in energy efficiency, water and environmental engineers, etc.).
Context
The socio-ecological problems that Khishig-Undur historically faces are comparable to those encountered in most of the country: climate change, waste crisis, overgrazing and desertification of the steppes, poor forest management, insufficient agricultural production, etc.
Since 2018, the situation in terms of waste, home insulation and agri-food practices has significantly improved in Khishig-Undur, thanks to the three main projects led by Ecosoum (including two in partnership with PADEM). If certain activities are intended to extend the work in Khishig-Undur, the main part of the project consists of disseminating and replicating the main achievements of Khishig-Undur in the rest of the country.
The mission
General objective: Reduce environmental pollution and improve resilience to climate change in Mongolia.
Specific objective: Improve waste management, home insulation and food sovereignty of Mongolian rural communities.
Activities
- Reduction in environmental pollution through the establishment of efficient and sustainable waste management systems
- Strengthening resilience to climate change through home insulation and improved agri-food practices
- Research, advocacy, capitalization and dissemination of activities
Beneficiaries
The project directly benefits the entire population of at least 12 rural soums, or approximately 36,000 people.
